EUVC W2 go down in 4 in debut match

10 Oct 2016 by Martyn Johnstone

EUVC’s newly formed W2 team played their first match of the season against Glasgow last Sunday. Although the girls have only had two training sessions together so far, they put up a great fight against their first opponents in the BUCS league.

The match began with a strong start from the Glasgow girls, winning the first set. But the score was tight till the end and Edinburgh came back strong with victory in the second. This gave a lot of confidence to the team, who although lost the 3rd and final 4th set, now feel bonded and determined to come back fighting on the 16th October for their next game. The match was full of suspense with a fluctuating score table and multiple saves in defence. Glasgow had a more structured system, however, it was Edinburgh who came up strongest at the service line bringing out a stream or points by server Kate Taylor and aces from many of the girls including Marie-Salome Sarfati.

It was great to see last year’s Kate Taylor and Michiko Yasahura make their debut as team setter and libero. They both worked fantastically side by side along with new players such as Gabriela Angelevska, who showed fast movement in service receive and during front-row attacks, and Christina Reuter whose aggressive middle-blocker hitting to the back court continuously put Glasgow out of system.

The W2 girls were glad to be given advice by their new coach Ewelina Michalik, greatly supporting the team throughout the game. Strategy and defence needs to be worked on before they confront St Andrews in the next couple of weeks, but one thing is sure, the Edinburgh girls will come out fighting. Go EUVC!
